Cinnamon Health Benefits ... What can cinnamon do for you?  Cinnamon is a powerful herb that is not just for baking.  Let's go on a journey to find out for ourselves just how much the delicious tree bark can do for your health and well being...

1.  Cinnamon Health Benefits and Diabetes

There are numerous studies demonstrating cinnamon’s ability to lower blood sugar in diabetics.

A double-blind study used 60 type 2 diabetics ... 30 were male and 30 were female with an average age of 52.

Participants were split into 6 groups. Groups 1, 2, and 3 were given cinnamon every day (1,3, or 6 grams). Groups 4, 5, and 6 were given a placebo.

At the end of 40 days, the test groups experienced a significant reduction in fasting glucose, triglycerides, LDL, and total cholesterol. The placebo groups had no significant changes.

Cinnamon also provides antioxidant protection, which helps ward off many of the complications that make diabetes such a destructive disease.

2. Cinnamon Health Benefits and Anti-oxidant Properties

More antioxidants in the blood means less inflammation and less risk of disease taking hold. Here is a study that shows how powerful cinnamon is at raising the antioxidants in the blood. (The participants of this study were all women who had polycystic ovary syndrome.)

The study was a randomized double- blind. The test group received three 500 mg capsules per day for 8 weeks.

Results included:

  • Greatly increased blood antioxidant level

  • Reduction in oxidative stress

  • Reduced LDL

  • Reduced total cholesterol

  • Improved HDL

3.  Cinnamon Health Benefits and High Cholesterol

A meta-analysis on cinnamon's cholesterol lowering ability found  a significant effect on lowering triglycerides and total cholesterol. This analysis didn’t find an effect on LDL and HDL.

So the data is still inconclusive, but what a tasty way to better blood though!

4.  Cinnamon Oil and Microbes

With the growing concern of antibiotic resistant microbes taking hold, it is very comforting to know about natures anti-microbial herbs.

While there are many herbs that can fight the nasty bad guys, today we are focusing on cinnamon ... more specifically cinnamon oil.

Essential oils are potent natural remedies for many ailments.

In one study, cinnamon oil was used against hospital-acquired infections. Hospital infections are rampant so we need all the help we can get.

The microbes used in the study were strains including:

  • MRSA

  • 4 Streptococcus strains and

  • 3 Candida strains including Candida krusei.

Cinnamon oil showed great killing power against all the strains.

Other oils were tested in the study, and all of them demonstrated killing power, but cinnamon oil was one of the most effective.

Yet again cinnamon proves it is more than just a pretty face and fragrance.

5. Cinnamon Health Benefits and Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer’s Disease is one of the most dreaded and feared diseases known to man. Who isn’t afraid to wake up one day and forget not only who they are, but who their family and friends are as well. This is a truly devastating illness.

Studies have shown that an extract of cinnamon inhibits tau accumulations, Aβ aggregation and toxicity in vivo and in vitro models.

Cinnamon also:

  • protects nerve cells from damage

  • has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties

  • helps to maintain good circulation.

All of these properties add up to more protection for your brain and a decrease in risk of Alzheimer’s.

In addition to cinnamon, there are a lot of other lifestyle measures that you can take to keep your brain healthy. Remember when you change your lifestyle to one that promotes health, your whole body benefits.

6.  Cinnamon Health Benefits and High Blood Pressure

Studies have shown cinnamon to lower blood pressure in type 2 diabetics. As a matter of fact it lowered the participants systolic and diastolic by almost 6 points.

While these studies were done with diabetics, if you are not diabetic the cinnamon may help you as well. After all, we have already learned that cinnamon improves blood circulation.

7. Cinnamon Health Benefits and Inflammation

Uncontrolled inflammation in the body is the catalyst for most, if not all, human disease. This makes lifestyle changes that target chronic inflammation invaluable.

Studies have shown that an extract of cinnamon can help alleviate and treat chronic inflammation. Because the extract is a more concentrated form of cinnamon, it has even stronger anti-inflammatory properties than cinnamon alone.

And of course it is always wise to eat your cinnamon on your favorite foods regularly. But if you are going for an anti-inflammatory benefit, you are probably going to have to use the extract to get the effect that you are looking for.

8. Cinnamon Health Benefits and Fungal Infections

Most people have heard that an antibiotic resistance era is upon us.  But did you know that some fungal growths are becoming resistant to medications too? It’s true.

And the type of fungus we are looking at here is non-albicans Candida and albicans Candida. Candida is implicated in blood stream infections. These blood stream infections have a high mortality rate at 30 to 40 %, so fungal infections should not be taken lightly.

In recent years candida has become increasingly more resistance to the first and second line antifungal drugs echinocandins and fluconazole. So researchers have been looking for alternatives, and cinnamon oil was one of those.

The study showed that cinnamon oil had the ability to help eradicate albicans and non-albicans Candida. This is good news considering the seriousness of blood infection.

9. Cinnamon Oil and Toe Nail Fungus

On a lighter note, if you have toe nail fungus, cinnamon oil works well there too.

Just mix a few drops with coconut oil and apply the oil to the fungus.

You can also eat some cinnamon to hit the fungus internally as well. Cinnamon oil can be ingested too if you get a food grade oil.

Just remember a little goes a long way.  No more than a few drops at a time should be ingested.

10. Cinnamon Health Benefits and Oral Health

Considering that cinnamon and it’s oil have antimicrobial properties, would it be good for your oral health? Sure it would.

As a matter of fact one study showed that cinnamon extract reduces plaque and gingivitis.

So you can add it to your toothpaste ... or make a mouthwash with it ... or both.

Making a homemade toothpaste with cinnamon oil is also effective.

There are many toothpaste recipes online.  One such recipe is as follows:

Use coconut oil as your base and add:

  • turmeric powder

  • clove powder

  • comfrey powder

  • walnut powder

  • cinnamon oil

Use this paste for 2 days, then use a good natural commercial toothpaste for 2 to 3 days, then go back to the homemade one.

The reason you must switch back and forth is that the powders found in the homemade can become abrasive if used for too many consecutive days, so just alternate. Good commercial brands I recommend are My Magic Mud and Earth Paste.

You see how fun and easy making your own toothpaste can be! Now get to it!

11. Cinnamon Health Benefits and HIV

A study was undertaken using cinnamon and other herbs to see if there were any inhibitory effects against HIV. The study was done in a lab with the HIV virus in a controlled setting.

All extracts, including cinnamon, had the ability to block HIV entry into the cells used.

Even though this study wasn’t done with human subjects, it still brings great hope for God's wonderful plants to help us with such a horrible disease. Anything that brings hope, brings possibilities.

12. Cinnamon Health Benefits and Wound Healing

Cinnamon is usually not thought of as a wound healer, but it is!

A double blind study using women who underwent a surgery called episiotomy. (Episiotomy is a cut made at the opening of the vagina during child delivery.)

Participants received a placebo cream or a cinnamon-infused cream for their wound.

The cinnamon group experienced less pain and faster healing than the placebo group.

This is yet another example of how our God-given herbs all have multiple medicinal uses.

13.  Cinnamon Health Benefits and Cardiovascular Health

Cinnamon just might be a delicious and easy way to support the health of your heart. How you ask?

In one study, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients received 500 mg capsules of cinnamon 4 times per day.  The results .... cinnamon:

  • lowered the participants CRP levels [measure of internal inflammation]

  • lowered tumor necrosis factor

  • slightly lowered diastolic blood pressure.

In another study, rats were fed a high-fat diet along with cinnamon as a supplement.

The study found that the cinnamon activated the bodies antioxidant and anti-inflammatory systems to slow the fat storing process.

Cinnamon had the ability to protect the rats from some of the ill health effects of a high fat diet. Of course no one should be eating high fat though.

Cinnamon has also been shown to help lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure.

So all in all, cinnamon protects the cardiovascular system by several different mechanism. And did I mention the taste? Yummy!

14. Cinnamon Health Benefits and Digestion

Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe any digestive upsets. When cinnamon is mixed with raw honey and eaten a few minutes before a meal, digestion of the meal will be improved.

Cinnamon also works as a great digestive aid all on its own. Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties in the gastrointestinal tract.

In a study using pigs, cinnamon supplementation was able to lower the temperature of the pigs' stomachs 2 degrees by reducing the amount of CO2 in their stomachs.

The cinnamon also protected the walls of the stomach and small intestine.  This is one reason why cinnamon helps IBS.

15. Cinnamon Health Benefits and Anti-Spasmodic Properties

Cinnamon possesses anti-spasmodic properties. This means it has the ability to relax and soothe tight and cramped muscles. This explains why cinnamon can help relieve the pain and cramping associated with the menstrual cycle.

Cinnamon also helps control bleeding, nausea and vomiting associated with the menstrual cycle.

Cinnamon boosts the circulation in the body which is one mechanism that muscle relaxation is achieved.
